The West End Food Pantry is located in the double garage of the Mission House of St. James United Methodist Church at 5150 Fillmore Avenue. This site is between North Beauregard Street and Seminary Road, across Fillmore Avenue from the Alexandria Campus of the Northern Virginia Community College.
The pantry is open from 5:00 to 6:30 pm on Monday nights, except on days when the City of Alexandria Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather. All City of Alexandria residents may receive free food when the pantry is open. Those wishing to receive food need only bring proof of residency and show up. The pantry does not report the identity of its clientele to anyone.
The West End Food Pantry was begun on October 24, 2016, by Hunger Free Alexandria, initially at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. (That church is now building affordable housing and a new church through Easter 2021). The food pantry is a collaborative effort of Resurrection, St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, First Christian Church, Fairlington Presbyterian Church, and St. James, whose members staff the pantry. Resurrection also provides the food and stocks the shelves.
If you know someone who lives in Alexandria and cannot afford food, please share this information with them. For those who drive, there’s a parking lot at St. James’ Church next door to its Mission House. There are bus stops nearby.
