ALTAR GUILD
Coordinator: Open
The Altar Guild exists solely to assist the
ministers and congregation by preparing the Sanctuary for worship services. We serve under
the direction of the Rector. Procedures have been developed in accordance with the rubrics
in the Book of Common Prayer, and to fit the style of worship of this congregation as seen
by the Rector and by many who have served on the Guild in the past. Altar Guild procedures
at the Church of the Resurrection are not elaborate. Simplicity suits the building and its
furnishings.
The duties of the Guild are taught by one member to
another. There is no formal training or "probationary" period. If a person is
new to the Guild, they will be assigned to work with a more experienced member. Only when
the person feels ready will she, or he, be assigned to independent duty. Each guild member
is also given an Altar Guild Manual with complete instructions regarding all aspects of
guild duties.
Guild members normally work in teams of two people
and are responsible for all services (except the Wednesday morning service) during the
week assigned. Typical assignments begin on Saturdays, when team members meet to clean and
replenish all vessels used for the Sunday services. Saturday preparation normally takes 1
to 2 hours. Guild members clear and reset the altar after the 8:00 o'clock Sunday service
to prepare for the 10:00 o'clock service (15 to 30 minutes); and then clear, clean and put
away all vessels after the last service (another 15 to 45 minutes) and care for the altar
linens.
All parishioners, both women and men, are welcome to
serve on the Altar Guild. Members normally serve once every four to six weeks. For
questions or to volunteer, please email the co-coordinators.
