We feed hungry people

We have a food pantry on the lower level of our church building to feed hungry people in Alexandria's West End. Since its opening on October 24, 2016, it has fed an average of 70 people in 21 families each week. Our food pantry is open every Monday from 5:00 – 6:30 pm, except Christmas and New Year’s or if Alexandria schools are closed for bad weather. Residents of the City of Alexandria are welcome to come every week. They just need to bring a photo ID showing their Alexandria address.

We gather up God’s food and give it away to our neighbors who need it. We get food from a number of sources, including ALIVE!, other churches, organizations, soon from Capital Area Food Bank, from individuals whose donations are important to the success of the food pantry. There is also an exchange of food among the three Episcopal churches in Alexandria having food pantries: Church of the Resurrection, Grace Church, and Christ Church.

This is an ecumenical project. Along with our own volunteers, others are from First Christian Church in Alexandria and St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Alexandria.

We said we gather up God’s food. That’s right. Everything we have comes from God, and being good stewards of God’s food, we feed our hungry neighbors.

On the last Saturday of each* month, the Church of the Resurrection is buzzing with activity as we serve as one of ALIVE's food distribution centers. Resurrection parishioners join a host of volunteers from other Alexandria faith communities, and from the community at large, to provide staple foods and fresh produce to anywhere from 150 to 230 families in Alexandria that need this assistance. The families are referred by city social service agencies.

There are a number of ways that Resurrection members help in this important outreach ministry:

  • From 8 to 10 am, we provide coffee, tea, and lemonade, along with a snack of cookies and fruit to the families waiting in the nave to receive their food. Resurrection volunteers prepare the drinks and food, serve them, and clean up. If you don't have time to physically help, a donation left at the church on Friday of cookies, bananas, and/or grapes is always welcome.
  • 8 am to noon, together with other volunteers, we put grocery bags of food togehter and distribute them to client families.
11:30 am to 12:30 pm, we clean the nave by removing trash bags and vacuuming.

Helping others is an extremely rewarding way for teens and adults to work together, and there are jobs for people of all ages. Stopy by on the last Saturday of the month to observe and see if you would like to be involved in this ministry.

* There is no distribution in November, and in December the distribution is on the second Saturday. Remaining dates for 2017 are: April 29, May 27, June 24, July 29, August 26, September 30, October 28, and December 9.
